MAMA’S CONCERT
My favorite memory of my mother is during a small family reunion,
when she surprised us all by walking to the old upright piano. “I think I’ll play a song,” she announced.
Dad had purchased it from a farmer for about $100, and Mama took in ironing to pay for my lessons. She found a used hymnal at a rummage sale, and we three sang through it night after night. When I married and left home, the piano sat unused for years. One day, she opened the bench and found my beginner’s book. “I can do this,” she decided and, without telling a soul, taught herself to play.
While we gaped in astonishment, she sat down, turned to “What a Friend,” and began to play with both hands. The instrument was badly out of tune, and she hadn’t learned to use the black keys or the damper pedal, so all the discordant notes ran together. It was actually painful to listen!
Suddenly, she stopped and turned around, blushing. “Oh, I made a mistake!” How I loved her at that moment! Who cared that it was less than perfect? This sweet, lovely lady had spent hours preparing a beautiful surprise for us.
Perhaps that’s the way God looks at us—He’s not so concerned with our performance as with the love we put into our efforts. And when we make a mistake and blush in shame, perhaps that’s when He loves us most of all!
