THE CHRISTMAS BOY
Scripture: “God places the lonely in families . . .” (Psalm 68:6)
Tommy Hillman was the love of my life, but I did not find him until my late thirties. We brought five almost-adult children into our marriage. They soon left, and we found ourselves uncomfortable empty-nesters. After much soul-searching, we applied as foster parents, hoping for a little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Just before Christmas, the call came. Four little boys urgently needed a home. “No” was never an option, so for the next several years our home literally quaked with little-boy chaos.
Then my father became terminally ill, and I had to leave Texas to stay by his side. Child Welfare found new homes, but one little guy—eight-year-old Robert—refused to leave. “I belong here,” he declared, and locked himself in his room. I dissolved in tears when comprehension swept over me. This child loves us, and we love him! We persuaded the social worker to leave him with us. Three years later, he officially became ours in a beautiful adoption ceremony.
Robert grew to be a fine man, blessing us far more than we ever imagined. Every year, when I celebrate the birth of Jesus, I give thanks for another miracle—the little boy who came at Christmas and became our son.
Prayer: Thank You again for blessing us far above anything we imagined. Amen.
