Scripture: “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine . . .” (Proverbs 17:22 KJV).

Does God have a sense of humor? I think sometimes as He watches us, He laughs out loud!

My mother never flew on an airplane and may have traveled by train once in her life. After my dad died, I persuaded her to come visit me in South Texas. At that time, my family here consisted of me, my husband, our teenaged son, and Weeblo—a totally worthless black dog of Beagle ancestry who slept under the house and was given to mourning his loneliness.

Mom loved our little home on the bayou, our seafood meals, and my husband (perhaps not in that order). The first morning after she arrived, however, she informed us we had a problem. “There is a child nearby being abused.  I can hear it crying.” We were skeptical—first, because we lived in a rural area with no small children nearby. Then too, she was quite deaf. If a child cried, we doubted she could hear it.

She continued to warn us, morning after morning.  Finally, in the middle of the night, she came to our room and pounded on the door with her cane.  “I can hear that child crying now.  You come listen!” As we sleepily donned our robes, our son Robert emerged from his bedroom.

“It’s Weeblo, howling at the moon.” Sure enough, we could hear our poor dog baying for some lost love.  Mom was still not convinced.

The next day, I brought Weeblo inside to show her. “This is what you heard.”  I thought she would laugh.  She didn’t. She stared at our trembling pet, her expression filled with indignation.  “To think I’ve been praying for an old black dog!”

Weeblo was none the worse for her prayers, I’m sure.  And I truly believe our Lord shared our laughter.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank You for lifting our hearts with shared laughter. Let our merriment always be kind.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
