BookScripture: A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold (Proverbs 22:1 NIVUK).

My name, Joanne, was given me by my father.  He loved Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and Little Men. The heroine became his ideal of what a girl should be, and he determined if he ever had a daughter, he would name her Jo.

I was an avid reader and also loved these books.  Years later, my own daughter discovered them.  I came into her bedroom one day to find her in tears. “Mama,” she sobbed, “Beth, (Jo’s sister) d-died.” For one moment, three generations were bridged into one as Dad, I, and Crystal shared the heartbreak of one of the book’s poignant moments.

“Joanne” means “God is gracious.” Each time I hear my name, I should remember His goodness and strive to mirror that quality.  However, in modern slang, it can mean an innocent-looking girl who is eager for adventure.  Before I surrendered my life to Christ, I desired popularity and excitement above God’s grace and so profaned the meaning of my name.

But God truly is gracious.  He transformed my life and declared me righteous in His sight. To Him be the glory!

Prayer: Gracious Lord Jesus, I can never thank You enough for restoring my good name.  Let me never fail again to honor You. Amen.

Thank you, Joanne, for the reminder that our God is the God of second chances. He is an awesome God! Worthy of all praise!
