THE RUNAWAY

PhilemonPhilemon is a “postcard” sent by St. Paul to a wealthy Christian friend whose slave has run away. The letter indicates that Onesimus had probably stole money and supplies from his master, so he was both a thief and a runaway—crimes deserving of death. Sermons based on this short Bible book usually dwell on the forgiveness Paul asks his friend to extend to the errant slave.

But I identify with the runaway slave and see the story through his eyes. I too rebelled and, eager to be free from rules, ran away from my Lord and Master. But even as Onesimus met Paul and his heart was changed, Jesus found me and turned me around. He paid my debts and sent me back with instructions to “sin no more.” I returned with a changed heart, determined to be a good servant. I will never forget that my life has been redeemed and I have been graciously accepted back into my Wonderful Master’s household.

Prayer: Thank You, thank You, thank You, precious Lord. I want to bring You glory in all I do, say, and think—every day, in every way.
